Foo Fighters
Foro Sol, Mexico City, MX
December 13, 2013

Finally, Foo Fighters in Mexico! This was the first time the band ever played in our city with two shows at the 55,000 capacity Foro Sol and their first shows after over a year (well, besides that secret show at the pizza place).

The first show happened last wednesday, December 11 before a venue far from being sold out. People with seat tickets were “upgraded” and let in the standing areas, making for a more intimate show. It didn’t seem like the perfect scenario for the band’s first show, but the band surely gave it all. As the setlist went on, the concert now felt like an intimate showcase for a few lucky ones.

Two days later, the first show that went on sale was about to begin. After The National finished their set, the Foro Sol was now almost full, ready for the Foo Fighters. They started with three great hits: All my Life, Rope and the Pretender were the first three songs but it was all hard rock from the first minute when the band took the stage and Dave Grohl ran through the catwalk that divided the crowd.

The stage setup at Foro Sol is usually so high that I needed to use my 70-200mm with a 2x teleconverter to get a clear shot of the rest of the band, standing on the side of the catwalk which let me had a straight shot, much better than shooting from below the stage. Thankfully, lighting was perfect with a whole structure on stage and a couple of spotlights following Dave’s every move, so it wasn’t a problem that the teleconverter reduced my aperture to 5.6. There was only a moment during All my Life (yeah, that moment, just like the video) where it was all reds, but other than that, it was perfect. This was a really fun concert to shoot and a great way to end this 2013!

This is the gear I used for this show:

  • Sony α99
  • Sony α850
  • 24-70mm f/2.8
  • 70-200mm f/2.8
  • 2x Teleconverter
