Behind the camera: Andy Watson

Who are you? Andy Watson (aka Drw-Images). Self-taught, Published Fashion & Music Photographer from Birmingham England Since I started taking photos in 2009 I have had the pleasure to photograph some amazing Bands / Artists (Madonna, Kiss, Faith N More, Jay-Z, Al Green, Tinnie Tempah, and many more.)

How did you get started? One of my family used to be in a local band, so when I had the chance I got a camera and used to take photos of there gigs, then contacted a local promoter and asked if I could shoot at some of his gigs, and it snowballed from there

What’s in the bag?

  • Canon EOS 5D Mark II
  • 24-70 2.8L
  • 70-200 2.8L
  • 85mm 1.8
  • Canon flash
  • and I have lighting for promo / fashion shoots as well

Which photographers do you admire? There’s a few… Local ones Katja Orgin, Gobinder Jhitta, Jodie Cunningham, Steve Gerrard, Lee Allen, Jason Sheldon, James Watkins and a few more then, Herman Leonard, David La Chappelle, Paul Harris, and one who has shot for Kerrang magazine. But with out seeing Rhiannon Jones photos on the wall of a local venue I would never had taken the push to get a camera

Your top 3 tips for music photographers?

  • Know the music of the artist your shooting, this helps with understanding what may happen at key points in songs etc.
  • Be yourself, shoot images you think capture the atmosphere or energy of a gig, photography is all about what each individual photographer sees and there interpretation of it, but always be respectful to the others in the pit (togs+security) and the crowd.
  • Expect the unexpected.

My favourite shot is? My favourite live shot is a shot of MSI, taken at the O2 Academy Birmingham (UK)
